TUNA TUNA TUNA TUNA TUNA TUNA TUNA TUNA TUNA TUNA!!!!!
This is the working calendar for Hobie & Friends Fishing Club.
If Hobie sent you this link, this is where the dates, boats, costs, links, and trip notes live. This is a private club trip page, not a public booking service, charter company, guide operation, or magical “I found a website so now I’m on the boat” machine.
The current club rhythm is mostly Southern California sportboat fishing: a spring overnight groundfish trip, a June Thunderbird overnight, and at least one San Diego 3-day tuna trip each year. Bay Area trips may still happen, but the main calendar has shifted south.
If you are invited on a trip, read the notes, check the Planning page, and ask questions early. If your entire preparation system is “I’ll text Hobie the night before,” that system has been reviewed and denied.

Below are past Hobie & Friends trips, reports, photos, bad decisions, good fish, weird weather, and evidence that this whole thing somehow became an annual operation.
The archive stays because the stories matter. Also because if Hobie writes a trip report and nobody reads it, he will still bring it up in person.

Status: Annual spring trip
Trip Type: Overnight groundfish
Typical Area: Southern California / Channel Islands-style fishing
Primary Targets: Rockfish, lingcod, whitefish, sheephead, and whatever is legal, open, and dumb enough to bite
Experience Level: Beginner-friendly to intermediate
Planning Notes: See the Overnight Groundfish section on the Planning page.
This is usually the first real saltwater club trip of the year. It is a good trip for newer anglers because the fishing is more vertical, the gear is simpler, and the goal is steady action rather than pretending your shoulder enjoys casting surface iron all day.
Bring warm clothes, basic bottom-fishing gear, cash, and the ability to follow directions from the crew.
Status: Annual June trip
Boat/Landing: Thunderbird / Newport Landing
Trip Type: Southern California overnight
Primary Targets: Yellowtail, white seabass, bonito, calico bass, rockfish, or whatever the captain thinks gives us the best shot
Experience Level: Intermediate, but newer anglers can come if they prepare correctly
Planning Notes: See the Thunderbird section on the Planning page.
This is a flexible SoCal overnight. It may be live bait. It may be dropper loop. It may be casting jigs. It may be rockfish backup. It may be all of that before breakfast because the ocean enjoys making liars out of everyone.
Bring a reasonable number of setups, not a mobile tackle museum.
Status: Annual offshore trip
Trip Type: 3-day San Diego tuna trip
Primary Targets: Bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, dorado, yellowtail, and whatever else is around
Experience Level: Intermediate to advanced
Planning Notes: See the San Diego 3-Day Tuna section on the Planning page.
This is the main offshore trip of the year. A 3-day tuna trip is not an overnight with extra snacks. It requires real gear, real prep, multiple line classes, heavier tackle, rigging before the trip, and the ability to function while tired.
If you are new to tuna fishing, ask early. Do not discover at the landing that your heavy setup is imaginary.
Bay Area trips, freshwater trips, local trips, duck hunts, and last-minute nonsense may still happen. These are not the core annual schedule, but they are part of the club ecosystem because apparently none of us can just sit quietly at home.
These trips will be added when they are real enough to deserve a spot on the calendar.

Warren "Hobie" Hoberman passed away April 12 2024 from natural causes. He was a kind and generous man that loved fishing the west coast for trophy fish. He held many records in the 70s and won several Rod and Reel Club calico bass tournaments, and at least 2 marlin derbies that I am aware of. He favored light tackle and encouraged me to do the same. He will be remembered, and his spirit lives on in me and my fishing adventures.
The tides may carry them away, but their stories will echo on every wave.
